What is Flualprazolam?
Flualprazolam is a novel synthetic depressant substance belonging to benzodiazepine chemical class. The effects of this drug substance are similar to Alprazolam, which on administration causes anxiety suppression, disinhibition, anticonvulsant, hypnotic, muscle relaxation and amnesia etc. It is relatively a new molecule and has been available from the research chemical market from year 2017. Currently, this drug is unscheduled. So all the information available about this substance is considered as tentative and should not be entirely trusted upon.
It is a member of benzodiazepine class as it contains a 1, 4 diazepine ring fused to a substituted benzene ring. At R7 position of this bicyclic structure, the Chlorine (Cl) group is attached. Moreover, a fluorine substituted phenyl ring is attached to this structure at R5 location. Flualprazolam is a fluorinated alprazolam, which makes it more potent than its parent compound and has slightly longer half life. Flualprazolam toxicity is low relative to dose. It is strongly recommended not to mix this substance with other depressant substances such as opiates, barbiturates, gabapentinoids, thienodiazepines, alcohol and other GABAergic substances, particularly in common to heavy doses, as death of an individual may occur. That is the reason it is strongly advisable that harm reduction practices should be observed while using this substance.
Flualprazolam is highly addictive and possess high potential for abuse. Moreover, the tolerance develops quickly, i.e. within couple of days of continuous usage. It is already documented that benzodiazepines discontinuation is extremely difficult, for the reason that it causes life-threatening effects in long-term users. So, sudden stoppage may lead to unavoidable withdrawal symptoms like seizure etc. Therefore gradual dose reduction is recommended to be followed.
Bioactivity of flualprazolam
It exerts anxiolytic, sedative, hypnotic, memory suppressing, disinhibiting and muscle relaxing effects on administration.
The mechanism of action of this substance is not established yet. But as it is a benzodiazepine, it may exert its action through GABA receptors.
Being a benzodiazepine, it exhibits a number of effects when bound to the receptor site of benzodiazepine. They potentiate the effects of the neurotransmitter GABA (gamma amino butyric acid), due to which inhibitory effects occurs, causing sedation.
Expected Physical effects of flualprazolam
The expected physical effects of drug include sedation, muscle relaxation, physical euphoria, loss of motor control, respiratory depression, and an increase in libido, seizure suppression, dizziness and temporary erectile dysfunction.
The paradoxical reactions on administration may occur in recreational abusers, individuals with mental disorders, children, and patients on high-dose regimens which includes increase in seizure, aggression, increased anxiety, violent behaviour, loss of impulse control, irritability and suicidal behaviour, though the incidence rate is less than 1%.
The cognitive effects it exerts includes anxiety suppression, disinhibition, cognitive euphoria, compulsive redosing, memory suppression, delusions of sobriety, analysis suppression, ego inflation, thought deceleration, emotional suppression, sleepiness etc.
Dosage information for flualprazolam
The primal route of administration is oral. Its total duration of action is expected to be between 6 ? 14 hours, with onset of action experienced within 10 ? 30 minutes of dose administration and the after affects remaining from 1 ? 36 hours.
The dosage range starts from a light level of 0.125 ? 0.25 mg, and a common dose ranging from 0.25 ? 0.5 mg, strong dose of 0.5 ? 1 mg, while a heavy dose is about 1 ? 2 mg.
When flualprazolam is taken, all other CNS depressants should be avoided. Overdose of benzodiazepine is treated as medical emergency as it leads to coma, brain injury or death if left untreated or not treated properly.
